Ms Joy Bigambo

Ms Joy Bigambo-W is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 13 years of experience post-admission to the bar. She holds a Masters of Laws Degree from The University of Nairobi, (majoring in Democracy and governance) A bachelor’s of Laws degree from Moi University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from The Kenya School of Law. She is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and the East Africa Women Lawyers Association.

Joy is an alumnus of the London Training Institute and the Strathmore Bussiness School where she attended a certificate in legislative drafting and Women in Leadership courses. In addition, she holds Certificates in; Legislative Drafting from The African Union Commission, a Certificate in Trial Advocacy from the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, a Certificate in Public the making process from the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis and a Certificate in Mediation and Alternative dispute Resolution from the Mediation Training Institute.

In her career as a legal professional, Ms Bigambo-W was privileged to Undertake assignments and work in various Government and Non-Governmental bodies in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. Before Joining the IGRTC She was a Senior Legal researcher at the Court of Appeal where she was tasked with conducting extensive Legal research, writing briefs, and legal opinions for respective judges, Analyzing pleadings and appreciating their tenor and effect and taking stock of the full tenor and effect of submissions made in the various Court of Appeals.

Ms. Bigambo-W worked as the Chief Executive Officer for the East Africa Women Lawyers Association where she spearheaded and promoted access to justice for women lawyers and special interest groups through advocacy and training, advocated for the maximization of the participation of youth, women in the political processes to influence decisions and promote gender equality. She was the Director for Legal and Intergovernmental Relations at the defunct Transition Authority. She led a team that provided technical advisory on legal and intergovernmental relations and developed and implemented a framework for legal and intergovernmental relations and the prevention/resolution of conflict between various levels of government.

Previously within IGRTC, Ms. Bigambo-W. worked as the Acting Director in the Functional Analysis Costing and Transfer and Assets and Liabilities department where she was in charge of Facilitating and coordinating the analysis and transfer of functions and Assets. She has worked as a special rapporteur of the African Union for Economic Social and Cultural meetings held bi-annually.

Joy is an astute lawyer who is well exposed with a good grasp on matters relating to Devolution, Human Rights and Gender, legal and program work. She extensively consulted and researched for other multi-agencies, gaining valuable experience, strong advisory, leadership and organizational skills, and good oral and written communication skills.

At the onset of her career, Ms Bigambo.W, was under the tutelage of the Law Firm of Ahmed Nassir and Abdi Kadir Advocates before proceeding to Kenya National Commission of Human Rights.
