
Sophie Amutavy is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, whose professional expertise is largely centered on legal research and development of advisories particularly in matters relating to human rights, devolution, intergovernmental relations, international relations and diplomacy; development of policy and legislative instruments; as well as undertaking strategic litigation.
She holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from the United States International University (USIU), a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B.) from Moi University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Her work experience spans across various Government and Non- Governmental Organizations (NGOs). She began her career in human rights where she worked for NGOs such as the Legal Aid Center of Eldoret (LACE), Christian Legal Education Aid &Research (CLEAR) and Kituo Cha Sheria. She then moved to the Judiciary where she was engaged as a Legal Researcher in the Court of Appeal, after which she joined the Transition Authority as a Research Officer. She currently works as the Director of Legal Services at the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee (IGRTC).
In addition to the above, she continues to serve in various capacities on pro bono basis. She serves as a Legal Counsel at the African Court on Human and People’s Rights. She has also served as a member of the General Assembly of the Action Aid International Kenya. Sophie is a recipient of the President’s Award Kenya, where she was awarded Bronze and Silver for voluntary community work undertaken in slum areas.
